23. "Julie of the Wolves" by Jean Craighead George

This story was published in 1972 and is best for students in middle school and older. It tells of the life of a young native girl of the Yupik tribe in rural Alaska and the story spurred two sequels after the original. Jean Craighead George published more than 100 children's books in her lifetime, including the well-known "My Side of the Mountain" and many of her books with themes focused on the natural world and the environment.
