24. "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London

The adventure novel was published in 1903 and is best for students in middle school and older. It chronicles life in the Yukon during the time of the Klondike Gold Rush, when sled dogs were in high demand to meet the needs of fortune seekers. It tells the story of Buck, a domesticated dog living in California, is stolen and turned into a sled dog, and returns to his wild roots as a pack leader in arctic conditions. The original book was comprised of a series of articles first published in "Saturday Evening Post."
