They turned back a bid to oust about one-fifth of their lawmakers from the opposition Nationalist Party in a recall election. Supporters of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party hoped to flip the balance of power in the legislature, but preliminary results on Saturday showed the recall efforts failed to remove any of the KMT lawmakers. The recall elections are unprecedented in scale, with more votes set for Aug. 23.
