Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.

The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Supreme Court Justices with no prior judicial experience

05/10/2010 5:09 pm ET Louis Brandeis (Associate Justice, 1916 - 1939): Justice Brandeis was nominated by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Wilson had offered him a cabinet position three years earlier but Brandeis declined, preferring to remain a lawyer and investigate the concentration of wealth by large companies, culminating in his 1914 book, 鈥淥ther People鈥檚 Money, and How the Bankers Use It.鈥� After a fierce political battle, Brandeis was seated as an associate justice in June, 1916.
