Brooks recorded "Friends" in 1990 after the song was written by writer Dewayne Blackwell, who also wrote the title song for the movie "Honky Tonk Man" and the Fleetwoods hit "Mr. Blue." Blackwell and his co-writer Earl Bud Lee said that the title of the song was inspired by Lee, who went to lunch with a group, then realized he didn't have money for the bill. He reassured them, "I have friends in low places. I know the cook."
