29. "The Giver" by Lois Lowry

This novel was first published in 1993 and is best for middle school students and older. It follows a young boy, Jonas, through his life in a society stripped of emotions and memories, and his role as a holder of the memories for all those around him. The role, and those he meets, helps him learn the value of knowledge, despite some of the heartaches attached to emotional understanding. He learns he has the power to help those around him feel again and risks his own safety to give others the full spectrum of emotions once again.
