30. "The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper

This series of five contemporary fantasy novels were released between 1965 and 1977 and is best for students in middle school and older. It follows a classic story of "light" versus "dark" with the main protagonist Will, 11, leading the "light" side thanks to special powers. The stories in the series include themes from different mythology and legends, including Arthurian, Celtic, and Norse.
