The novel was published in 1999 and is best for students in middle school and older. The book received the Newbery Medal and Christopher Paul Curtis was awarded the Coretta Scott King award for excellence by an African-American author. The novel tells the story of Bud Caldwell, a 10-year-old orphan living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression, and his adventures with foster families and running away from home.
