The novel was published in 1945 and is best for students in high school and older. The story is seen as dystopian and satirical, providing an allegory for the danger of dictatorships and unchecked power, which is what the author felt he saw unfolding in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era of the 1940s. The book was originally criticized, due in part to a Russian alliance during WWII, but it received more popular acclaim as the US entered the Cold War.
