The 1967 film was nominated for Best Picture as well as several other awards. Some scenes were filmed at Castle Combe village in Wiltshire, England. The residents were not happy with the movie being filmed there, however, especially after the film crew took all the television antennas off the houses without asking the owners' permission. The resentment grew to such proportions that one resident named Ranulph Fiennes used explosives to blow up a dam built by the crew. Later, an illness caused by freshwater snails swept through the village, and when the production filmed the final scene in which Dr. Dolittle and the others sail off on a giant snail, some Castle Combe residents took this as an insult and threw rocks at the huge prop snail.
