With the fall of Kabul, the EU has been trying to get its people and Afghan allies out. But the collapse of Afghanistan has also reignited European fears of unregulated migration 鈥 setting priorities at odds.
Five years ago, Wendy Wang was at work when a child care center sent her a photo of her daughter taking her first step.
鈥淚鈥檓 like, 鈥榃ow, I missed this,鈥欌 recalls Ms. Wang. 鈥淚t was really hard.鈥
So she changed to a new job that allowed her to work from home with her child. Now, as head of research for the Institute for Family Studies, Ms. Wang has in which more than half of parents with children under age 18 say they prefer remote work 鈥 either most of the time or half of the time. Mothers and fathers believe that flexible work hours and shared responsibility are the optimal arrangements for child care. The respondents reported a pandemic shift, which the study calls a 鈥渉omeward bound ... work-family reset.鈥
鈥淸Parents] actually kind of figured out this new way of taking care of their kids,鈥 says Ms. Wang, 鈥淚 say 鈥榥ew,鈥 because previously they didn鈥檛 even think that could be an option.鈥
She adds the caveat that balancing work and child care during the pandemic isn鈥檛 easy, especially for those in blue-collar jobs that require on-site work. Meanwhile, it鈥檚 getting harder for companies to entice white-collar workers back to post-pandemic cubicle life. Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel Corp., told that 鈥渢here is no going back鈥 from hybrid and remote work.聽
As Ms. Wang can personally attest, employers may see a benefit when workers enjoy a better work-family balance.
鈥淭he productivity of my work has increased,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd I spend more time with my daughter.鈥
