"Lady Bird" writer Russell tells the World War II story of a Texas internment camp that held immigrants from Germany, Italy, and Japan as well as their children who were born in the U.S. Some of those in the camp, called Crystal City, were exchanged for Americans living in Germany and Japan. Nelson says that the decision to center the book on the children involved makes the story very "personal."
