Hulse's debut novel tells the story of Wes Carver, who is returning to the small Montana town of the title. Wes used to work in Black River as a corrections officer but was held hostage during a riot, an incident which undermined his ability to play his beloved fiddle. Now the criminal who held him hostage could be released from prison and Wes must decide what to do. Nelson calls this novel an "earthy Western." "It's angry and violent and also incredibly human and humane," she says.
