The boy wizard will be back in movie theaters.聽
The eight films in the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥 movie series will screen in IMAX movie theaters for a week, beginning on Oct. 13. The films will reappear about a month before an all-new film set in the 鈥淧otter鈥 universe, 鈥淔antastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,鈥 arrives.聽
The last 鈥淧otter鈥 movie was released in 2011. The film series stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.
The return of the 鈥淧otter鈥 movies follows the debut earlier this year of a stage play set in the 鈥淧otter鈥 universe, 鈥淗arry Potter and the Cursed Child,鈥 which is currently being staged in London.聽
Warner Bros., the studio behind films set in the 鈥淧otter鈥 universe, isn鈥檛 the only studio to bring back recent hit films. The original three "Star Wars" films returned to theaters in the 1990s, and marathons of previous movies are fairly common to attempt to build anticipation (there was a marathon of Marvel movies at AMC Theatres prior to the release of the movie 鈥淐aptain America: Civil War,鈥 for example). Disney, for one, has in recent years re-released some of their past animated hits in 3-D.
Like the re-release of the 鈥淧otter鈥 series, these Disney releases come with the lure of seeing favorite movies in a new format, if 鈥淧otter鈥 fans didn鈥檛 see the movies in IMAX the first time around. (All but the first two were released in IMAX when they first debuted.)聽
Disney has re-released movies such as 鈥淭he Lion King,鈥 鈥淏eauty and the Beast,鈥 鈥淔inding Nemo,鈥 and 鈥淢onsters, Inc.鈥 in 3-D.聽
鈥淭he Lion King鈥 was the most successful of these, with pointing out that the film 鈥渆arned more than the other three new releases combined鈥 in its opening weekend.聽
But Disney actually moved away from this strategy after others didn鈥檛 perform as well, with reporting that the studio decided not to go forward with a planned 3-D release of 鈥淭he Little Mermaid,鈥 and calling the 3-D releases of 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥 and 鈥淢onsters, Inc.鈥 鈥渄isappointing.鈥
