Ben Affleck in 'Batman' movie: An echo of past Caped Crusader films?

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara recently stated that a movie about Batman starring Ben Affleck was moving forward. Previous reports have stated that Affleck will direct the film as well.

A new 鈥淏atman鈥� film that will star Ben Affleck is officially moving forward.聽

At the ongoing 2016 CinemaCon event, in which movie studios present upcoming films to theater owners, one of the studios that has been presenting projects is Warner Bros. of 鈥淏atman v Superman.鈥� And now Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros., has said during the event that a film starring Mr. Affleck as Batman will move forward.聽

"I'm also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie," .

It had been previously reported that was in the works.聽

Affleck has directed, among other films, the Oscar-winning 2012 movie 鈥淎rgo.鈥�

While last month鈥檚 鈥淏atman v Superman鈥� was critically panned, some reviewers singled out Affleck鈥檚 performance as one of the better aspects of the movie. 鈥溾�橞atman v Superman鈥� 鈥� actually features some terrific performances,鈥� wrote. 鈥淎ffleck has the square jaw and resolute demeanor to convincingly channel Bruce." Meanwhile,聽 wrote that the character of Batman is 鈥渃onvincingly played by a committed Affleck.鈥澛�

If it is in fact made, a solo 鈥淏atman鈥� film directed by and starring Affleck would be the first to feature only Batman since 鈥淭he Dark Knight Rises,鈥� the 2012 conclusion to director Christopher Nolan鈥檚 critically acclaimed trilogy starring 海角大神 Bale.

How would Affleck鈥檚 鈥淏atman鈥� film fit in among the modern 鈥淏atman鈥� movies, which most view as having kicked off with the 1989 鈥淏atman鈥� film directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson?聽

The Nolan films are often remembered for their disturbing themes and gritty realism. Monitor film critic Peter Rainer wrote of the middle 鈥� and most acclaimed 鈥� entry, 2008鈥檚 鈥淭he Dark Knight,鈥� 鈥淓ven by the pitch-black standards of its genre, Chris Nolan's 鈥楾he Dark Knight鈥� is dark indeed 鈥� this comic-book movie is more disturbing, and has more freakish power, than anything else I've seen all year.鈥澛�

The recent film 鈥淏atman v Superman鈥� continued this theme 鈥� to a fault, according to some reviewers, who complained of its unremitting darkness. 鈥淎t a punishing two and a half hours, it鈥檚 all very turgid and unsmilingly sober,鈥� Ms. Hornaday wrote of the film.聽

But Affleck鈥檚 directorial work has often been critically acclaimed, with his movie 鈥淭he Town鈥� nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in addition to the success of 鈥淎rgo.鈥� Perhaps his take on Batman will present dark themes in a way that is more pleasing to critics.
