Director McG comes aboard 'Shadowhunters' TV series

The director will helm at least one episode of the upcoming ABC Family series. 'Shadowhunters' is based on the 'Mortal Instruments' series by Cassandra Clare.

The upcoming ABC Family TV adaptation of the 鈥淢ortal Instruments鈥 young adult book series has found a director for at least one of its episodes.聽

According to , director McG, who is also an executive producer for the series and has previously been behind such movies as 鈥3 Days to Kill,鈥 鈥淭his Means War,鈥 and Charlie鈥檚 Angels,鈥 will direct at least the first episode of the TV series. The show is titled 鈥淪hadowhunters鈥 after the occupation of its characters. (In author Cassandra Clare鈥檚 world, Shadowhunters battle otherwordly beings.)

McG may direct more than one installment of the series, according to EW.聽

鈥淚 read the books and found them to be interesting stories,鈥 McG told EW. 鈥淚 liked Cassandra Clare鈥檚 voice, and I was engaged鈥 We鈥檙e just trying to bring the cinematic experience to the television form one hour at a time, one week at a time. And we鈥檙e absolutely passionate about honoring the fans and delivering on the promise of the book series.鈥

The 鈥淢ortal Instruments鈥 series centers on Clary Fray, a teenager who discovers she has the ability to be a Shadowhunter. The final book in the 鈥淚nstruments鈥 series was released in 2014. Clare鈥檚 other work includes other book series set in the same universe like the 鈥淚nfernal Devices鈥 series.聽

A movie based on the first book in 鈥淚nstruments,鈥 titled 鈥淭he Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,鈥 was released in 2013 but did not do well at the box office. It starred actress Lily Collins as Clary and Jamie Campbell-Bower as Clary鈥檚 love interest Jace. writer Jake Coyle called the film 鈥渕ediocre鈥 all the current tropes of teenage fantasy here careen into one another鈥 the plot is astonishingly overcooked鈥 [but] it鈥檚 not brooding or abundantly self-serious鈥 the handful of comic, self-deprecating moments in the film鈥 gives 鈥楥ity of Bones鈥 a pleasant cheeriness that it would have done well to pursue further.鈥
