Telephone strike talks: some progress reported

August 18, 1983

Negotiators bargained for the second day to end the 11-day-old nationwide strike by 675,000 telephone workers. Spokesmen for both sides reported progress on major issues, although a settlement is not yet in sight.

On the Texas gulf coast, strikers offered to work without pay on an emergency basis if hurricane Alicia hits land. Scattered incidents of vandalism were reported across the country.
