New twist swells uproar over alleged Hitler diaries

April 27, 1983

Controversy heightened over Adolf Hitler's purported diaries. The latest twist: The head of West Germany's federal archives said his office had pronounced eight Hitler documents genuine after Der Stern magazine submitted samples to him last year. But Prof. Hans Booms said only one of the eight documents appeared to have come from the diaries themselves. Meanwhile, other West German experts joined British historian Hugh Trevor-Roper in casting doubt on the diaries' authenticity. The London Times said it won't publish any more extracts without verification. Der Stern said it would.
