Afghanistan recently printed large amounts of paper money without bullion backing, the latest sign of its collapsing economy, Western diplomats in Islamabad said Tuesday.
The diplomats said the government also took the unusual step of buying foreign exchange from local money dealers. They said the measures were expected to boost further the country's inflation, which they estimated at nearly 100 percent.
