Porches

November 9, 1981

Now I know the need for porches, dry roofs for hard summer rains.

Porches are the place to remember

yesterday's undone thing.

What was it I left

unmended, untended,

twenty years too late?

Was it an old plow rusting in the rain?

Pumpkin flowers shoot

into hayrake prongs,

laughing at the loss of memory.

Dry roofs for hard summer rains.
