Three Mile Island cleanup with scant A-release seen

The Three Miles Island nuclear reactor can be completely decontaminated and its radioactive wastes disposed of with minimal releases of radioactivity, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Thursday. Reactor No. 2 of the Pennsylvania plant has been shut down since a March 28, 1979, accident in which radioactive material was released into the containment building and the environment.
The commission said trucks transporting radioactive wastes will use the federal Interstate highway system across the northern parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and through Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and the northern tip of Idaho to Hanford, Wash.
