Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.

The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Turkey's 7.2 magnitude earthquake

10/24/2011 10:48 am ET Emergency personnel tend to Ferhat Tokay on Oct. 28 after he was rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building 108 hours after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Ercis, Van province, Turkey. The quake leveled about 2,000 buildings in eastern Turkey, killing at least 573 people and leaving about 2,500 injured and thousands of homeless. Authorities say another 5,700 buildings are now unfit for habitation.
