The spike is a shot struck with such great downward force as to be virtually unreturnable. Skilled players can sometimes 鈥渄ig鈥� these balls off the floor in the backcourt, but the most effective strategy used against them is to have two defenders time their jumps so as to form a wall that blocks the spike. Part of the challenge of executing a successful spike is that the player may not hit the net on the shot鈥檚 follow-through.
