Age and wisdom frequently go hand-in-hand, so it makes sense that the English-speaking world鈥檚 oldest university remains one of the world鈥檚 greatest, at least per the QS ranking system. Dating back to the 12th century, Oxford is the second-oldest surviving university in the world, after Italy鈥檚 University of Bologna. It鈥檚 also perhaps the world鈥檚 most dominant institution in the humanities. This year its philosophy, modern languages, geography, and English language and literature departments all placed first in the world.
