While UCL is a consistent face in lists of the world鈥檚 top universities, it tends to perform far better on the QS ranking than other leading surveys. This year UCL was 17th on the Times Higher Education list, for instance, and 21st on the Academic Ranking of World Universities put out by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Its higher stature on the QS list may owe in part to the added weight that ranking gives to the nebulous category of reputation, which is determined by asking academics around the world to rank universities in their own fields of expertise. UCL also benefits from being particularly well rounded. Though it鈥檚 in the top ten in only three fields, for instance, it鈥檚 in the top 50 in 19.
