India, China, Brazil, and other developing economies could lobby to have one of their own at the top of the IMF. Several names have emerged as possibilities:
Trevor Manuel, South Africa鈥檚 former finance minister and current planning minister, is one name floating around, put forward by South Africa鈥檚 current finance minister. South Africa is one of the so-called BRICS 鈥 Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa 鈥 displaying burgeoning economic growth.
Time Magazine , an economic adviser to the Indian prime minister and the former head of the IMF鈥檚 independent evaluation office. As chairman of the country鈥檚 planning commission, he played a key role in India鈥檚 current economic growth.
Singapore Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in Singapore鈥檚 monetary authority, central bank, and financial regulator, and is head of the IMF鈥檚 International Monetary and Financial Committee. But he was recently appointed deputy prime minister of Singapore and has dismissed talk of being a candidate for the top IMF position.
