Whoopi Goldberg attends the world premiere of "Nobody's Fool" in New York on Oct. 28, 2018. ABC suspended Ms. Goldberg for two weeks on Feb. 1, 2022 and asked Ms. Goldberg to 鈥渞eflect and learn about the impact of her comments鈥 regarding race and the Holocaust.

Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for two weeks Tuesday as co-host of 鈥淭he View鈥 because of what the head of ABC News called her 鈥渨rong and hurtful comments鈥 about Jews and the Holocaust.

鈥淲hile Whoopi has apologized, I鈥檝e asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities,鈥 ABC News President Kim Godwin said in a statement.

The suspension came a day after Ms. Goldberg鈥檚 comment during a discussion on 鈥淭he View鈥 that race was not a factor in the Holocaust. Ms. Goldberg apologized hours later and again on Tuesday鈥檚 morning episode, but the original remark drew condemnation from several prominent Jewish leaders.

鈥淢y words upset so many people, which was never my intention,鈥 she said Tuesday morning. 鈥淚 understand why now and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful and helped me understand some different things.鈥

Ms. Goldberg made her original comments during a discussion on the show Monday about a Tennessee school board鈥檚 banning of 鈥淢aus,鈥 a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Nazi death camps during World War II. She said the Holocaust was 鈥渘ot about race ... it鈥檚 about man鈥檚 inhumanity to other man.鈥

鈥淚 misspoke,鈥 Ms. Goldberg said at the opening of Tuesday鈥檚 show.

The flare-up over Ms. Goldberg鈥檚 remarks this week highlighted the enduring complexity of some race-related issues, including the widespread but strongly contested notion that only people of color can be victims of racism.

鈥淓ffective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,鈥 Ms. Godwin said in her statement.

鈥淭he View鈥 brought on Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League and author of 鈥淚t Could Happen Here,鈥 on Tuesday to discuss why her words had been hurtful.

鈥淛ewish people at the moment are feeling besieged,鈥 Mr. Greenblatt said.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, praised Ms. Goldberg for being outspoken over the years on social issues but said he struggled to understand her statement on the Holocaust.

鈥淭he only explanation that I have for it is that there is a new definition of racism that has been put out there in the public recently that defines racism exclusively as the targeting of people of color. And obviously history teaches us otherwise,鈥 Mr. Cooper said.

鈥淓verything about Nazi Germany and about the targeting of the Jews and about the Holocaust was about race and racism. That鈥檚 the unfortunate, unassailable historic fact,鈥 he said.

Kenneth L. Marcus, chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, linked Ms. Goldberg鈥檚 remarks to broader misconceptions of the Holocaust, Jewish identity, and antisemitism.

鈥淚n her error, she was reflecting a misunderstanding of Jewish identity that is both widespread and dangerous that is sometimes described as erasive antisemitism,鈥 said Mr. Marcus, who is the author of 鈥楾he Definition of Anti-Semitism.鈥

鈥淚t is the notion that Jews should be viewed only as being white, privileged oppressors,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t denies Jewish identity and involves a whitewashing of Jewish history.鈥

Mr. Marcus referred to the use of anti-Jewish stereotypes 鈥渁bout being powerful, controlling, and sinister,鈥 coupled with downplaying or denying antisemitism.

Jill Savitt, president and CEO of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, offered a measured view of Ms. Goldberg鈥檚 comments.

鈥淣o one can get into Whoopi Goldberg鈥檚 head, ... But I think what she鈥檚 trying to say is that the Holocaust is about hatred. It鈥檚 about inhumanity. It鈥檚 about what human beings will do to one another that is inhumane,鈥 Ms. Savitt said.

Complex issues demand more than placing blame, she said.

鈥淚 think people are not as quick to give anybody the benefit of the doubt these days, which is a shame because in order to work through painful, complicated, difficult issues, especially painful histories,鈥 Ms. Savitt said, 鈥渨e could give each other a little more grace because people are going to make mistakes or they鈥檙e going to say things that offend.鈥

In Israel, being Jewish is rarely seen in racial terms, in part because of the country鈥檚 great diversity. Yet Jewish identity goes far beyond religion. Israelis typically refer to the 鈥淛ewish people鈥 or 鈥淛ewish nation,鈥 describing a group or civilization bound together by a shared history, culture, language, and traditions and deep ties to Jewish communities overseas.

On 鈥淭he View鈥 Monday, Ms. Goldberg, who is Black, had expressed surprise that some Tennessee school board members were uncomfortable about nudity in 鈥淢aus.鈥

鈥淚 mean, it鈥檚 about the Holocaust, the killing of 6 million people, but that didn鈥檛 bother you?鈥 she said. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e going to do this, then let鈥檚 be truthful about it. Because the Holocaust isn鈥檛 about race. No, it鈥檚 not about race.鈥

She continued on that line despite pushback from some of her fellow panelists.

The U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington responded to Ms. Goldberg with a tweet.

鈥淩acism was central to Nazi ideology. Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder,鈥 it said.

That tweet also included a link to the museum鈥檚 online encyclopedia, which said the Nazis attributed negative stereotypes about Jews to a biologically determined racial heritage.

Ms. Savitt said while Jews are not a race, Nazis made Judaism a race in their effort to create a racial hierarchy that 鈥渂orrowed this, it should be said, from the American conversation about racial superiority and eugenics.鈥

On Twitter, there were several calls for Ms. Goldberg鈥檚 firing, where it appeared caught up in the familiar debates between left and right.

Mr. Greenblatt said the talk show, in the market for a new co-host following last summer鈥檚 departure of Meghan McCain, should consider hiring a Jewish woman to keep the issue of antisemitism in the forefront.
