Election 2012: 12 reasons Obama won and Romney lost

President Obama went into his reelection fight facing significant head winds 鈥 most important, high unemployment and slow economic growth. But for a multitude of reasons, including Obama鈥檚 positives and Republican challenger Mitt Romney鈥檚 negatives, Obama succeeded. Here鈥檚 our list.

11. Moderate Mitt vs. 'severely conservative' Mitt

When Romney told a major conservative conference in October 2011 that he had been a 鈥渟everely conservative鈥 governor of Massachusetts, many Republicans groaned. Romney had been anything but 鈥 working closely with the state鈥檚 heavily Democratic legislature and enacting 鈥淩omneycare,鈥 the model for 鈥Obamacare.鈥 But as a presidential candidate, Romney ran to the right to win the nomination, then tacked back to the center in his convention speech and in the debates. Conservatives weren鈥檛 sure they could trust him, and moderates weren鈥檛 sure he would really have the political freedom to be one of them if he won the White House. Romney was left looking as if he lacked a political core.
