Top 4 threats against America: the good and bad news

America鈥檚 top spy chiefs and intelligence experts come together every year to share their best guesses about the biggest threats that will face the country in the year ahead. Here are the top four pieces of good and bad news to come out of the annual threat-assessment hearing in Congress Tuesday.

8. Domestic extremists: bad news

A handful of homegrown terrorists 鈥渉ave exhibited improved tradecraft and operational security and increased willingness to consider less sophisticated attacks, which suggests the HVE threat may be evolving.鈥 

During most of the past decade, most HVEs 鈥渄id not have the technical capability to match their aspirations.鈥 But in 2009, US-born 鈥渆xtremists鈥 who were trained overseas attempted 鈥渢wo mass-casualty explosive attacks鈥 on US soil. 

As a result, intelligence officials 鈥渞emain alert to potential dynamics鈥 that could galvanize HVEs.  

These include 鈥渁 series of events perceived to reflect an anti-Islamic bias,鈥 US military involvement in another Muslim country, and increased 鈥淗VE use of the Internet to share propaganda, form social or peer networks, or recruit others for attack planning.鈥
