This is the opinion of Sen. Carl Levin (D) of Michigan, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who is opening a congressional investigation into what the Pakistani government knew regarding bin Laden鈥檚 suburban enclave. It was located just down the road from the Pakistani military academy.
鈥淚 think at high levels 鈥 high levels being the intelligence service 鈥 at high levels, they knew it,鈥 Senator Levin told ABC News. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 prove it. I just think it鈥檚 counterintuitive not to.鈥
Pakistan鈥檚 top Army official warned that any similar US commando operation in the country would be a violation of Pakistan鈥檚 sovereignty and would harm relations between the two countries. For now, the US military has not been asked to remove any of the 鈥渁 little under 300鈥 US service members currently in the country, Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan told reporters Friday.
鈥淲e have not been alerted to any new decisions about the size of our personnel in Pakistan,鈥 he said, adding that 鈥渢he numbers ebb and flow over time.鈥
