The 2009 ABC comedy stars actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson as one half of a gay couple that's part of the title family. Ferguson's character, Mitchell, is raising a daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) with his boyfriend Cameron (Eric Stonestreet). Mitchell is also the son of the patriarch of the family, Jay (Ed O'Neill) and has a sister, Claire (Julie Bowen).
Ferguson also was the first to play the role of Leaf Coneybear in the Broadway premiere of the 2005 musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."
