Monroe wrote "Blue" and released a version which he recorded with his band, the Blue Grass Boys, in 1947. The song has been covered by many artists, including Carl Perkins, who performed it in his stage shows early on in his career, as well as the Beatles (minus John Lennon, as the three other members sang it on a DVD included with "The Beatles Anthology"), The Stanley Brothers, and Elvis Presley, who recorded a version.
Sam Phillips, the owner of Presley's recording home Sun Records, reportedly said, "That's a pop song now!" after hearing Presley's faster version.
