The 2007 movie directed by Makoto Shinkai follows a boy named Takaki T艒no, beginning during his childhood in the 1990s and focusing on various parts of his life as he becomes an adult in modern-day Japan. During his childhood, Takaki meets a new girl at his elementary school named Akari and soon forms a close relationship with her.
"Centimeters," which is set in our own world, was a new direction for Shinkai, who had previously been behind movies with otherworldly elements.
Shinkai also took on a new challenge when he wrote the novelization of the film, which was his first published work.
