This novel, published in 1976 is best for students in middle school and older. The book follows the life of a young black girl, Cassie Logan, and her family living in the depression-era south, and it addresses issues of racism and living off the land. The book won the 1977 Newbery Medal and inspired two more sequels, published in 1981 and 1990, plus a prequel about the Logan family published in 2001.
