32. "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman

This award-winning trilogy of fantasy novels is best for students in middle school and older. The first book of the series, "Northern Lights" was released in 1995 (It was titled "The Golden Compass" for North American audiences). The second book "The Subtle Knife" was released in 1997, and the final book "The Amber Spyglass" was released in 2000. The books follow the lives of two children as they wander through parallel universes with a storyline that includes concepts in physics, philosophy, and theology.
