Shark attacks at Surfside: Teen punches, kicks himself loose

Shark attacks at Surfside Beach, Texas, leaving a teenager injured, but OK. The teen freed himself during the shark attack by punching the shark.

A teenager is recovering from聽shark聽bites on his hand and leg as he stood in waist-deep water at a Southeast Texas beach.

The 15-year-old was with a youth church group at Surfside Beach around 2:45 p.m. Monday when a聽shark聽bit him on the left leg.

Gregg Bisso, assistant police chief with Surfside Beach, says when the teenager hit the聽shark聽with his left hand, it bit him there as well.

Bisso says the teenager, whose name was not released, sustained cuts to his leg and hand and was taken by helicopter to a Houston hospital. The boy's injuries were not life threatening.

Officials do not know what kind of聽shark聽bit the teenager.

Surfside Beach is located about 60 miles south of Houston.
