ABC鈥檚 new show 鈥淨uantico鈥� premiered Sunday Sept. 27 and the program is already winning over critics 鈥� and reminding them of some of ABC鈥檚 other successful shows.

鈥淨uantico鈥� centers on various young adults being trained to join the FBI, including Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra). The plot is reportedly going to reveal that one of the FBI trainees organized a terrorist incident.

The show is created by Joshua Safran, who served as an executive producer for the NBC show 鈥淪mash鈥� and for the CW television series 鈥淕ossip Girl.鈥�

鈥淨uantico鈥� has so far received mainly positive reviews from critics, including Robert Bianco of and Hank Stuever of the , who write聽that the show 鈥渟park[s] our interest in the mystery and the hero鈥� and that 鈥淐hopra brings a sincere, centrifugal force to this swirling storyline.鈥�

Not everyone is won over, however. James Poniewozik of the wrote, 鈥淭oo much... [narrative gymnastics], though, keeps you from investing much in the characters鈥� it lacks the idiosyncrasy that grounds a show like 鈥楽candal鈥� through its wildest flights.鈥澛�

Why do reviews of "Quantico" often reference 鈥淪candal"?

聽鈥淪candal鈥� creator Shonda Rhimes isn鈥檛 involved in the show. But many critics note that features of 鈥淨uantico鈥� 鈥� such as the storyline of a female character getting involved romantically with a male co-worker, the many plot twists, and a group of young people who work together 鈥� bear similarities to the shows created or produced by Ms. Rhimes. Those programs currently make up ABC鈥檚 hugely successful Thursday night lineup: 鈥淗ow to Get Away With Murder,鈥� 鈥淪candal,鈥� and 鈥淕rey鈥檚 Anatomy.鈥� 鈥淪candal鈥� and 鈥淕rey鈥檚鈥� were created by Rhimes, while Rhimes is an executive producer for 鈥淢urder.鈥澛�

But there are certainly worse examples for "Quantico" to copy: Rhimes鈥� programs have become a staple of ABC programming and her show 鈥淕rey鈥檚,鈥� which recently debuted its 12th season, is one of the longest-running programs on primetime right now.聽

Rhimes has also been hailed for the representation of various races on her shows. (She herself when being honored at the Human Rights Campaign鈥檚 Los Angeles Gala earlier this year, 鈥淚 really hate the word 'diversity.鈥� As if there is something unusual about telling stories about women or people of color or LGBT characters on TV. I have a different word. I call it 'normalizing.' I make TV look like the world looks.鈥�)

鈥淨uantico鈥� continues that. Chopra, who is a Bollywood star, has become one of several Indian actors on TV now, with others including Mindy Kaling of Hulu鈥檚 鈥淭he Mindy Project鈥� and Kunal Nayyar of CBS鈥檚 鈥淭he Big Bang Theory.鈥�
