'Jupiter Ascending': What are critics saying about the movie starring Mila Kunis?
Loading...
Reviews for the newest effort by 鈥淭he Matrix鈥 directors Andy and Lana Wachowski have so far been mixed to negative.
鈥淛upiter,鈥 which centers on Earth resident Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) who discovers she鈥檚 actually royalty, was originally scheduled to hit theaters this past summer but was pushed to February. (It鈥檚 in theaters now.) Lana Wachowski told the that the glut of sequels and established franchise films being released during the summer months made the studio behind 鈥淛upiter鈥 decide to move the film. 鈥淭he summer is built around familiarity," she said. 鈥淢any cultural critics who shape awareness for films are obsessed with sequels and derivative material. They wildly crave it. That kind of environment is hostile to originality. It only makes space for derivative material and rejects originality. I think Warner Bros. was uncomfortable with that environment.鈥澛
In addition to 鈥淭he Matrix,鈥 the Wachowskis were also behind the 2008 movie 鈥淪peed Racer鈥 and 2012鈥檚 鈥Cloud Atlas.鈥
Our own movie critic Peter Rainer gave 鈥淛upiter,鈥 which co-stars 鈥22 Jump Street鈥 actor Channing Tatum as a hunter protecting Jupiter and Eddie Redmayne of 鈥淭he Theory of Everything鈥 as villain Balem Abrasax, a C grade.
鈥淚t鈥檚 one of the聽more nutty futuristic escapades I鈥檝e ever seen, although that鈥檚 not quite聽the same thing as saying I liked it,鈥 Rainer wrote. 鈥淚 enjoyed this movie more than the last two films from the Wachowskis,聽the interminable 鈥樷 and聽鈥楽peed Racer.鈥 On the other hand,聽鈥楾he Matrix鈥 it's not.鈥澛
Reception from other reviewers has been fairly thumbs-down 鈥 the film currently holds a score of 41 out of 100 on the review aggregator website .
Alonso Duralde of was one critic who mostly enjoyed it.聽
鈥淭here is no 鈥榯he top鈥 over which The Wachowskis will not go in 鈥楯upiter Ascending,鈥 a sci-fi saga that鈥檚 convoluted and silly, yes, but also exciting and enthralling,鈥 Duralde wrote. 鈥淭rying to keep up with the plots, counter-plots, deceptions and shifting allegiances will make your head swim, but thankfully 鈥楯upiter Ascending鈥 boils down to good aliens and bad aliens, with no shortage of adrenaline-packed set pieces and intergalactic scenery that looks like it belongs on the side of a van. (And I mention both of these facets as selling points.)鈥 who cares if the story is occasionally impenetrable or if some gags land with a thud when the thrills and the eye candy keep coming at such a breathless pace?鈥澛
Manohla Dargis of the also found the visuals dazzling but the story somewhat incomprehensible.聽
鈥淚t seduces the eye with filigreed flourishes even as the mind reels from some of the mildewy storytelling,鈥 Dargis wrote of the film. 鈥淸The Wachowskis] are good at making entire worlds, but, whether distracted by the big stuff or bored by the putatively small, they have a tough time making a conversation between two people come alive.鈥
However, Richard Roeper of the found the whole movie incomprehensible.聽
鈥淭here鈥檚 no defending 鈥楯upiter Ascending,鈥欌 Roeper wrote. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no explaining 鈥楯upiter Ascending.鈥欌
