News brief

California voters approved new congressional maps.

They change five U.S. House districts in favor of Democrats. Proposition 50 passed with two-thirds of the vote. The map expires in 2030 and is a direct response to Texas redistricting, which strengthens Republicans. At least three of the affected Republicans have said they will run again, despite the changes. The Prop. 50 win bolsters Governor Gavin Newsom, who said recently he is considering a White House run. California Republicans filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday in a bid to block the new maps.
