New scrutiny of Afghan evacuees following D.C. shooting

Welcome to a new week.

This morning our immigration reporter Sarah Matusek brings us the latest on the Trump administration鈥檚 crackdown following the shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., last week. The suspect is an Afghan national.

The government has suspended decisions on asylum, affecting about 1.5 million applications, amid revived security concerns about the vetting of Afghan evacuees following the 2021 fall of Kabul. A Justice Department report earlier this year defended the FBI鈥檚 screening, but a 2022 government watchdog report found that the Biden administration may have allowed Afghans to enter who 鈥減ose a risk to national security.鈥

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army is paying close attention to how drones are changing modern warfare in Ukraine 鈥 and realizing they are behind. Anna Mulrine Grobe has that story.
