Welcome to a new week.

This morning our immigration reporter Sarah Matusek brings us the latest on the Trump administration鈥檚 crackdown following the shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., last week. The suspect is an Afghan national.

The government has suspended decisions on asylum, affecting about 1.5 million applications, amid revived security concerns about the vetting of Afghan evacuees following the 2021 fall of Kabul. A Justice Department report earlier this year defended the FBI鈥檚 screening, but a 2022 government watchdog report found that the Biden administration may have allowed Afghans to enter who 鈥減ose a risk to national security.鈥

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army is paying close attention to how drones are changing modern warfare in Ukraine 鈥 and realizing they are behind. Anna Mulrine Grobe has that story.

Pupils attend a first day in a newly opened underground school in Kharkiv, Ukraine, April 21.

During the fourth year of its war in Ukraine, the Russian military has stepped up strikes against civilians and their daily necessities, from homes to energy supplies. One frequent target has been children鈥檚 outdoor playgrounds. They have been chosen perhaps to evoke deep fears and weaken wartime morale. The highest single-incident death toll for children occurred during a Russian attack in April at a crowded park for families in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Yet, rather than neglecting a child鈥檚 need for joy and learning in open-ended play, Ukrainians and foreign donors have been building new recreational places 鈥 to allow kids to be kids. These include 鈥減op-up鈥 playgrounds brought into safe buildings by mobile teams. Many of the newly built underground schools include recreation rooms that allow for soccer, chess, dancing, and other activities. In relatively safe areas of Ukraine, new outdoor playgrounds have been built with modern designs to bring neighborhoods together.

These child-focused efforts bring healing and social cohesion to help Ukraine survive as a sovereign country. Yet, as first lady Olena Zelenska points out, they also relieve children of a long-term label as victims and instead adopt an identity of resilience. 鈥淲e in Ukraine do not want them to become a generation of war. We want them to become a generation of victory,鈥 she told German broadcaster ZDF.

Whether they know it or not, Ukrainians are honoring a child鈥檚 鈥渞ight ... to engage in play,鈥 which is protected under the United Nations鈥 Convention on the Rights of the Child. Last year, on June 11, the U.N. celebrated the first International Day of聽Play. One purpose of the celebration is to preserve the idea of children as innocent in world trouble spots such as Ukraine.

鈥淧lay聽is how children learn to navigate the world,鈥 a U.N. website states. 鈥淚t helps them to build narratives, knowledge and social skills and contributes to their overall development.鈥

When drones and bullets are flying overhead in war, a playground is not just a playground, whether it鈥檚 indoors or outdoors. In Ukraine, a child鈥檚 love of play is a necessary antidote to fear.

The festivity around such traditional markets, part of a centuries-old tradition, draws tourists and lifts local economies. Heightened security, with its associated costs, has been a growing consideration for planners after market attacks, including one in the eastern German city of Magdeburg last December.
