Israel and Iran are now at war. So are Russia and Ukraine. When Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney opened the G7 summit on Monday, he told his fellow democratic leaders, 鈥淲e鈥檙e gathering at one of those turning points in history.鈥 That resonates in Europe. In a meeting of security experts in Paris last week, a consensus emerged that while unity with the Trump administration is essential, relying on Washington as a partner in peace is no longer possible. Yet out of that uncertainty, the leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, and Canada are taking on more responsibility for their own shared security 鈥 and perhaps beyond.
