I live in Rapid City, South Dakota, where we have "closed primaries." For a long time I've been thinking that a solution for so much partisanship is to have an "open primaries system" not only in South Dakota but also all over the nation. This would break the gridlock of a divided government.
When I read Sen. Snowe鈥檚 commentary 鈥淎mericans must mobilize for moderation,鈥 I was so glad that someone agrees with me. She writes: 鈥淯rging more 鈥榦pen primaries鈥 in which voters need not declare a party affiliation will produce candidates for the general election who are less extreme.鈥 I am registered as Independent.
