Need a side job? The 10 best cities for 'gig economy' workers

The gig economy has become typified by piecemeal jobs found on platforms like Uber and Etsy, but that's just part of a larger sea change in the American labor force: 54 million workers considered themselves freelancers last year. Here are the 10 US cities with the most opportunities for them, according to 

8. Ann Arbor, Mich.

Like Charlottesville, Ann Arbor is a student hub, home to the University of Michigan and its 19 schools. In January 2016, General Motors began the launch of its own 鈥personal mobility brand,鈥 Maven, in the city. GM has invested more than $500 million in Lyft, which, like Uber, is one of the most frequently-cited examples of the gig economy, but Maven further changes the way people get to and think about work. Instead of being driven by someone else, users can pick the car they want and pick it up using an app.
