Volkswagen diesel scandal: 10 key dates

The fallout stemming from Volkswagen admitting cheating on diesel emissions tests became global news just a few short months ago, but the scandal has roots dating back several years. Read on for a timeline of what happened.

Volkswagen is recalling 1,950 diesel vehicles in China to correct engine software that the automaker has admitted cheats on emissions tests. The recall applies to 1,946 Tiguan sport utility vehicles and four Passat B6 sedans, all of them imported, the company said Monday, Oct. 12, 2015.

Oct. 15, 2015: Volkswagen announces a recall 8.5 million more cars across the European Union nations. 

The move comes soon after German authorities announce the company will have to recall 2.4 million diesel cars in Germany and is seen as pre-emptive as other nations in Europe could find defeat devices in vehicles that would need to be recalled in the future.
