Cash mobs: a new boost for local business?

In cities across the nation, people are gathering. Organizing via social networking sites, they are meeting up at prearranged places, at prearranged times. Armed with $10 and $20 bills, these mobs have one goal: boosting the local economy through support of locally owned, independently operated business.
Inspired in part by the flash mob phenomenon of large-scale, public choreographed song and dance number fame,聽 this new trend, known as "cash mobbing," just may be heading to a local business near you.
鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to reorient consumer behavior,鈥 said Andrew Samtoy, a Cleveland lawyer who was one of the first cash mob organizers, and a major advocate for the national movement. His Cash Mobs blog has proclaimed Saturday, March 24, as International Cash Mob Day.
At a time when the economy is sluggish and consumer spending flat, cash mobs organize groups of consumers year-around in an effort to reward small businesses involved in the local community. Cash Mobs has a continually updating list of mobs around the United States 鈥 and now in at least nine other countries. 聽Mr. Samtoy estimates there are mobs being organized in over 150 cities worldwide.
鈥淲e鈥檙e adding more every day,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not even sure exactly how many there are at this point.鈥
Like many grass-roots movements, the structure of the movement is loosely defined, and its exact point of origin is hard to pinpoint. Samtoy first had the idea this past September, after watching the thievery of some flash mobs, and the rioting going on overseas in London.
Unbeknownst to Samtoy, one month earlier and a few hundred miles away, a Buffalo blogger named Chris Smith had independently organized a similar mob.聽 When a reporter pointed this out to the Cleveland group, the two groups were introduced.
鈥淐hris told me, 鈥業t鈥檚 not about getting credit, don鈥檛 worry about it,鈥 鈥 Samtoy said. 鈥 'It鈥檚 about supporting small business, it鈥檚 totally organic.鈥 鈥
Organic or not, the phenomenon has come a long way in the past six months. The Cash Mobs blog, for example, includes tips for starting your own mob and 聽a list of 12 rules for the prospective mobber.聽 The first piece of advice listed in the 鈥淲ant to start a cash mob?鈥 section of the blog: Create a Twitter handle.
Social networks have streamlined the organizational aspect of cash mobs, Samtoy said. 聽Like flash mobs, cash mobs are using Twitter and Facebook to reach a large number of potential mobbers quickly and effectively. A quick search across Twitter turns up dozens of related handles including CMSanDiego, CMIndianapolis, and CashMobAtlanta.
Crowd sourcing via local Cash Mob Facebook pages and Twitter accounts is also how the businesses are chosen. Mob Rule No. 1 is: The mob date must be announced at least a week in advance via Twitter. Rule No. 2 continues: The location at which to meet will be announced, but not the specific business to support.
Rules No. 8 and 9 on the Cash Mob blog are focused on getting mobbers together after shopping, to relax and socialize. Samtoy takes these two rules seriously, envisioning a grand best-case scenario where mobs create the beginning of a national 鈥渞eclamation of our communities.鈥
鈥淕etting people together, having people start to interact, meet people they wouldn鈥檛 otherwise meet,鈥 Samtoy said. 鈥淚f we can get a more civil dialogue about what鈥檚 ailing our country now, I think that would be fantastic.鈥
Romance wouldn鈥檛 be a bad thing either.聽 鈥淚鈥檇 like to see a cash mob marriage come from one of these,鈥 he said.
The first store to be mobbed by Samtoy and crew was a Cleveland bookstore called Visible Voice, followed by a consignment shop, a toy store and a comedy club. Alison Oxford, the organizer of the recently formed Cash Mob Atlanta, said their first mob patronized local running shoe and apparel company Big Peach. Mobbers in St. Petersburg, Fla., hit Haslam's, the state鈥檚 oldest independent bookstore, while a boutique gift shop christened Anything Goes in Warwick, R.I., was the happy recipient of a mob in the first week of February.聽
Timothy Hudyncia is the co-founder of the Rhode Island group Let鈥檚BuyLocal.org, a business alliance he helped found in November to raise awareness of ways to create and sustain healthy local economies. Mr. Hudyncia is part of the 鈥渂uy local鈥 movement, which has been increasingly involved in the promotion of cash mobs across the country.聽 Buy local advocates appreciate the fact that cash mobs raise awareness of their platform, and many have been quick to capitalize, organizing mobs of their own.
鈥淭here鈥檚 an awful lot of evidence showing that the local economy is healthy and vital when a large portion of expenditure is at local business,鈥 Hudyncia said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all in this together. The sooner we stop looking and acting as islands, the sooner we get to someplace very special, which is feeling like we're a part of the fabric of the community. We鈥檝e gotten away from the fact that we鈥檙e all stewards of the local community.鈥
Hudyncia is affiliated with the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), a group that considers itself the 鈥渁ctivist arm of the localization movement,鈥 according to AMIBA co-founder Jeff Milchen.
鈥淎n important benefit to remember is the local multiplier effect,鈥 Milchen said. 鈥淓ach time someone makes a purchase from a local business, a far greater portion of that money is recirculated in the local economy, creating more jobs, and contributing to the overall wealth of the community.鈥
Milchen said that what he鈥檚 seen so far from the cash mob movement is positive, especially in terms of its raising awareness of regional buy local campaigns.
鈥淥bviously, we hope that this will only add to that momentum,鈥 he said. But, he also cautioned against a one-and-done pattern of altruism. 鈥淚f you just patronize the local store when it鈥檚 convenient, it may not be there for your convenience much longer. Those business need day-to-day patronage, not just the occasional impulse buy.鈥
Some people are less enthusiastic. The problem with the buy local philosophy, and cash mobs in general, is that they don鈥檛 necessarily impact total consumer spending, explained Bill Dunkelberg, chief economist for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
鈥淲hat they want to do is pick people who they want to help,鈥 Mr. Dunkelberg said. 鈥淭hey take their spending there, and take it away from where they might be spending otherwise. The point is, we measure total consumer spending as part of GDP [gross domestic product]. We don鈥檛 care where you spend it on the macro level, we just add up the total cash receipts.鈥
From his perspective, whether you spend $10 at the local Rite Aid, or at a mom and pop pharmacy around the block is more an emotional distinction than an economic one. 鈥淎 retail store is a retail store,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey both rent space, hire local people, pay for utilities and water bills and taxes.鈥
In February , the NFIB鈥檚 small business optimism index rose ever so slightly. The 0.4-point increase marked the sixth consecutive month of improvement, although the index remains lower than its levels a year ago.
鈥淥bviously, we fell off the horse,鈥 Dunkelberg said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got back up and we鈥檙e saddled again 鈥 but it鈥檚 not clear where we're headed. I鈥檓 not sure many business owners are going to count on cash mobs as a way to help their business along.鈥
Back in Cleveland, Samtoy is quick to聽 distinguish himself from advocates like Milchen and Hudyncia, while also disputing the more pessimistic observations of Dunkelberg.
鈥淲e鈥檙e focused on the merchant, or middle man side,鈥 Samtoy explained. 鈥淚鈥檓 fine with the buy local movement. I鈥檝e met the chicken who makes my eggs. But it鈥檚 not something we're super focused on. It鈥檚 not that I鈥檓 against big business. I am in favor of the businesses in our communities who are making those communities distinctive or unique.鈥
The potential macro effect of the cash mobs on the economy begins at the micro level, he said. 鈥Wal-Mart started as a dime store in Bentonville, Ark. It was people in Arkansas who started shopping there, and supporting their local business. It started from these humble local roots. Same as General Motors, or Apple or Microsoft. They didn鈥檛 start out huge, they grew.鈥
A group of 40 people spending $20 each may not have an immediate macro effect, that鈥檚 true, Samtoy said. And it鈥檚 hard to predict how long the movement will continue. But ultimately Samtoy believes the overall effect may prove to be substantial: 鈥淚t's not going to happen overnight, but long term I think it's going to have benefits that we can't predict right now.鈥
