Academy Awards: Oscar winners that came from books
Various films that triumphed at the 2015 Oscars had their origin in the printed page.
At the Oscars held on Feb. 22, actor Eddie Redmayne won the Best Actor Oscar for the film 鈥淭he Theory of Everything,鈥� the Stephen Hawking biopic that was based on a memoir by Hawking鈥檚 wife Jane titled 鈥淭raveling to Infinity.鈥�
The film for which Julianne Moore won the Best Actress statuette, 鈥淪till Alice,鈥� was adapted from a book of the same name by author Lisa Genova.
Meanwhile, the film 鈥淎merican Sniper,鈥� which is based on the memoir of the same name by film protagonist Chris Kyle, received the Oscar for Best Sound Editing and the movie 鈥淭he Imitation Game,鈥� which was adapted from the book 鈥淎lan Turing: The Enigma鈥� by Andrew Hodges, captured the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
The movie 鈥淏ig Hero 6,鈥� which is based on a comic, took the Best Animated Feature prize at the ceremony.聽
Several of this year's high-profile Oscar nominees also came from the written word. Best Adapted Screenplay nominee 鈥淚nherent Vice鈥� was based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon.聽
Rosamund Pike of 鈥淕one Girl,鈥� which was adapted from a book of the same name by Gillian Flynn, received a Best Actress nod and Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their work in the movie 鈥淲ild,鈥� which was based on Cheryl Strayed鈥檚 memoir.聽
Other book-based Oscar nominees include 鈥淭he Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies鈥� (nominated for Best Sound Editing), comic-based 鈥淕uardians of the Galaxy,鈥� 鈥淐aptain America: The Winter Soldier,鈥� and 鈥淴-Men: Days of Future Past鈥� (all nominated for Best Visual Effects), and 鈥淯nbroken,鈥� which was based on Laura Hillenbrand鈥檚 book and was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.
