Literary adaptations again scored big at the Academy Awards, with the movie 鈥12 Years a Slave鈥 (based on the memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup) taking Best Picture as well as other awards and other adapted films also scoring prizes.
In addition to Best Picture, 鈥淪lave鈥 actress Lupita Nyong鈥檕 won the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in the film and the movie itself won Best Adapted Screenplay.
Other adapted films that scored Oscars last night included 鈥淔rozen,鈥 which is based on the Hans 海角大神 Andersen fairy tale 鈥淭he Snow Queen鈥 and won Best Animated Feature as well as receiving the Best Original Song prize for 鈥淟et It Go.鈥 聽
Those behind the 2013 film adaptation F. Scott Fitzgerald鈥檚 classic novel 鈥淭he Great Gatsby鈥 also went home with a couple of statuettes, with the movie winning the Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
It was an interesting Oscars ceremony this year, with many saying that the Best Picture race between 鈥淪lave鈥 and the film 鈥Gravity,鈥 which follows astronauts in a crisis, was too close to predict. While usually the director for the Best Picture winner also takes the Best Director prize as well, this year 鈥淕ravity鈥 helmer Alfonso Cuaron won the award but 鈥淪lave鈥 was anointed Best Picture. However, the last time this happened was only last year because 鈥淎rgo鈥 director Ben Affleck, whose movie won Best Picture, wasn鈥檛 even nominated for the Best Director prize. (Ang Lee took the award for the film 鈥淟ife of Pi.鈥) Before that, the last time there was a split was in 2006, when director Lee took Best Director for 鈥淏rokeback Mountain鈥 but the film 鈥淐rash鈥 won Best Picture.
As for last night鈥檚 other prizes, 鈥Dallas Buyers Club鈥 actor Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett of 鈥淏lue Jasmine鈥 won Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. 鈥淒allas Buyers Club鈥 actor Jared Leto took home the Best Supporting Actor prize.
