6 picture books for summer reading

It鈥檚 summertime 鈥 how better to celebrate than with pictures books that feature green grass, bare feet, and lots of playtime with friends?

2. 'And Then Comes Summer,' by Tom Brenner and Jaime Kim (illustrator)

More riotously playful is And Then Comes Summer (Candlewick, 32 pp., ages 4 to 8), by author Tom Brenner and illustrator Jaime Kim. Also built on a rhymed text, 鈥淎nd Then Comes Summer鈥 splashes bright acrylic drawings on each page, all cataloging the joys of summer. From saying goodbye to school to selling lemonade, playing games, and marching in a parade, the story considers the many ways a child can enjoy the season. It all culminates in a family camping trip and an evening of s鈥檓ores and sleeping bags 鈥 in other words, everything that is best about life outdoors.
