10 best books of August: the Monitor's picks

Here are 10 August must-reads suggested by the Monitor's book critics.

4. "Walking with Abel," by Anna Badkhen

In 2013 war correspondent Badkhen (author of "The World Is a Carpet") walked across Mali鈥檚 savannah with the nomadic Fulani people. Her book about the experience beautifully considers a wide range of delightful and important topics: ruminations on African history, the relations between the Fulani and other ethnic groups, the sometimes fickle camaraderie between men and cows, and the ever-expanding encroachment of the modern world on an ancient way of life.
